Ash definitely made it clear that gyms are much harder but now after seeing the fight against Brock I have to say that it appeared to be only a bit harder rather than a lot. Two more pokemon with same strength don't make the fight radically more difficult. Sure you need more pokemon or overlevel a bit but I expected the difficulty to be quite a bit more than this.
Enjoying this story, thank you. Two things: 1) Your battles could use a little more structure. I assume you chose not to have referees, which normally give a clear start and end to battle, but without that your battles become a bit fuzzy at the start/end, and when a Pokemon goes down. You just kinda start with an attack and swap out Pokemon without noting the battle start or the pokemon fainting, and it’s a bit unpleasant and unclear as a reader. 2) Wasn’t Flint the gym leader? Why would he go try to be a trainer and fail, when a gym leader is a top class trainer already? Something is off there.
