Comments of chapter undefined of His Unforgiving Duchess

When the Duke was in the midst of his "love", I wondered if the 2nd duchess used some spell on him which made him so cruel to his first wife and child, but it would seem he simply has tunnel vision when he decides he wants something, to the exclusion of all else. How else could he possibly think his wife will return to his estate peaceably?
