The troupe was there to hunt for anything they could sell, and Helena hired them a couple of times, including when she wanted to take back her residence in the capital. The unicorn incident/quest was one of the journey they went through together. Helena killed her family and it made her into some kind of an outcast too, just like the troupe members were. They found semblance in each other's company, even though Helena could only put her complete trust into one person... the troupe leader.
