Honestly, if a bunch of people are fighting demons with various spells and martial arts, it would be easy to realize that some attacks work and some don't. Knowing beforehand would help a lot, but it's not absolutely necessary. Though, I can't argue against the fact that demons need to do something if they don't want to be exterminated. You can't rely solely on an old secret pact.
