It has a lot to do with grief and unhealthy coping mechanisms! (No one gets therapy) - basically in my mind, he couldn't bear to live in a home reminded of her presence so he sought to effectively erase her, hoping it would make him get over her quicker. He didn't want to be seen as weak too, to be openly grieving for his wife esp cos his peers would not have understood, since they didn't love their wives!
