Guiltythree
People are complaining as to why the king isn't moving against Nephis. Essentially he can't be certain if his lieutenants would be able to kill Nephis' merry band. She walked into his house and proceeded to one-shot one of his strongest subordinates in front of everyone. Not to mention this was right after he displayed his might to crush any thought of rebellion i.e. it was essentially a direct challenge against him. His backstory and personality shows how cunning he is. He wouldn't move without knowing if he could win. By letting them show their strength against the invading monsters he learns about their abilities as well as the limits of their strength. All the while setting them up onto a higher pedestal from which he can knock them off and thoroughly squash the people's thoughts of rebellion. It doesn't matter how many shards they collect in those few weeks. He's been farming shards for over a decade. Any increase in power in that short time would be arbitrary. In the end by setting her up for failure he will reaffirm to the people that the ONLY hope in their ruined hellscape is him and him alone. Genius
This further expands on what I commented in the previous chapter. While I know Nephis is socially awkward, it shouldn't be impossible for her to at least explain to her group, Cassia and Sunny, what her plans are. In fact, I think that she doesn't even need to tell them at all, if she thinks telling them would risk ruining her plan, she should just tell them that. I for one, personally, hate being kept in the dark, especially if it somehow involves me, or people close to me. But if there's a reason, I'd probably accept it. Now, Sunny and his friends are involved, and he's kept in the dark, he isn't even though told something like, "Trust me." Nothing. I have severe anxiety, if that happened to me, you'd bet that my mind would be rolling. Sunny seems to be a paranoid person, so I bet this anxiety and stress of trying to guess what his own friend is trying to do is gnawing at his mind. I don't think Sunny is completely at fault. And, just a guess, maybe whatever he did to the person he killed that he feels guilty about, was just in the moment where he snapped due to all of the anxiety and stress. Whatever he was talking with that person about seemed to just make him afraid, when he's already terrified.
There's also this other thing that's been bugging me. I don't trust Cassia. Like, at the first chapter of this volume, I genuinely thought Cassia was the reason for the separation of Sunny and his group. I also remember how she wanted to tell him about all the prophetic dreams she had, but didn't once he couldn't promise to take care of Nephis. Cassia obviously isn't incompetent, her family also seems to be wealthy enough to hire someone to take care of her(unless that was issued by the academy,) and teach her fencing. She also survived the First Nightmare. And now that I am thinking about her way more right now, I don't think we know much about Cassia except that she's a "Person that needs to be protected because of how cute and adorable a doll is." I.E People just have a strange impulse because they, "Want to help her." If that is not an attribute, I don't know what is. I'm pretty sure we know more about Nephis, considering we know of her parents, and that she seemingly like tales of heroes like Odysseus. I'm still suspicious of her, and this feeling probably isn't going anywhere for a while.
This whole situation doesn’y make much sense to me. Based on what we know of King, as soon as he caught wind of this situation he would just send his lieutenants out to slaughter Changing Star and her whole band of followers. The vast majority of the useful people live in the city so theirs no real reason to let anyone in this litle rebellion survive.
from what I've gathered reading through the comments gunslaug has stayed along time in the castle he has become strong a king and very wealthy in soul shards and knowledge since he overthrew the previous regime he must have acquired much knowledge of their trials and errors personally I don't think his content with just being a king never getting stronger waiting for death or to be defeated by someone stronger my assumption is after all these years of failed rebellions and maybe assassinations suddenly here comes nephis of the immortal flame clan with something different from the rest he's tired of the same old routine he would also like to be awakened and become even stronger since everyone knows what is in the crimson spire gunslaug knows even more either am wrong and he just a dictator hoarding everything and just giving enough for survival destroying any form of hope through crushing any ideas of rebellion or he's a smart cunning and calculative guy who has been planning non stop on how to go back bidding his time waiting for the right moment maybe his observing changing star to see how she will fit into his plans as for sunny he doesn't seem to be important just an ordinary team member and I believe that's where he's gonna make a very big mistake underestimating sunny
