I've figured out the thing that keeps annoying me; author uses hype as a crutch. The constant references to how important this detail will become in the future, or how this is the pivotal point in a much larger story, etc, are a very hit or miss technique (usually miss), because it almost definitionally takes you out of the action to tell you about other stuff. It's like watching anime with a friend who is constantly saying stuff like "these three side characters come back as villains in a later arc," "this character is the MC's hidden rival," "MC eventually becomes the God of Snipers." It's like "dude, we get it, you've already seen the anime or read the manga and know the story--can we experience that too or are you just going to keep bombarding us with minor spoilers?"
