I wonder why he thinks being pregnant was the thing that put her in danger during the last campaign? While pregnancy is indeed dangerous, even today, I think the only reason Maxi survived at all when she emptied her mana to save Ethe Lene was because she had a child to take that death for her. Though that's not confirmed within the story it really seems like she went so far beyond the boundaries of her mana level that the only explanation was that she took her child's mana, too. Though it's probable that if she were to learn that was the case she would find it devastating, so it's probably best that no one has suggested it. Maybe if Riftan had ever bothered to ask her about her experience that day, he would be able to figure it out.
This chapter really just goes to show how traumatic experiences seep into our bones and change us as people. It seems cut and dry from the outside looking in, but everyone processes things differently and unless wounds are tended to, they fester or leave us with scars that may be invisible to those around us. Even the strongest and bravest people have their fears while others are learning to overcome them. Riftan loves Maxi so much and understands how precious she is to him, hence why is willing to go to such great lengths and torture himself because he refuses to walk down that path ever again. They may be right next to each other, but I also feel like they are worlds apart too. Reading this tonight was so bittersweet, and it didnât help that I had to stop reading midway because my BFF called to tell me her mom passed away tonight after a long battle with cancer before she could make it to say goodbye. Sorry for the rambling, excuse me while I go cry myself to sleep tonight đ
That was a good read. Iâve been expecting it for so long Iâm glad it finally happened. I really wish for things get better between them and recover the time lost. Also, hope for this wonât be the only time they have their moment. At the same time is heartbreaking that Riftan thinks he didnât protected her enough and donât wanted her to be at risk. Sigh.
I feel like this is so unlike the characters of this story. I mean, yes itâs very Riftan like to resist wanting to make love to her for whatever reason holding him back, but to do so and call her a demon for wanting to after all that time they spent apart from each otherâŚa demon? He worshipped and adored her.
