I always liked it when Shikamaru switched from Lazy to Strategist. He would have achieved great heights if he had put effort into Self-Improvement. Imagine him with the Hundred Power Seal or the Orochimaru Seal to compensate for his Low Chakra Volume (hopefully Daichi will help his Friends)

Even Kishimoto couldn't write Shikamaru right. Characters can't be smarter than the author. That's why he wrote him lazy.
