You are right. Well, let's assume that the guild could contact him through some magical telephone and he came back after hearing the news. It's a bit forced but I want them to meet before the start of the canon. Thanks for the info.

The beast job took place before gildarts took the 100 year quest and that before Cana told anyone he’s her dad then how does makarov know Cana is gildarts daughter I’m confused
