The RCC's stupidity was very believable because they've never had to be strategic. They were always the biggest dog in the yard, so they've never had to think 2 steps ahead, or ask themselves, "Why did Berengar commit so much to a distant ally when he has shown no sentimentality in his foreign policy before?" At least before this bad decision, a crusade would've been fought on Austrian soil and damaged Austrian infrastructure. Now it's on Iberia and 3-4 years too early. The last thing the RCC wanted was to send its armies piecemeal against the meat grinder.

After this war and the crusade you could create something like a Nations League that incentivates the "whealth" of the nations. And create a point for that NL in a conquered territory!
