Shouldn't he be more worried about the guy possessing him instead of advancing to saint? He could just hide out in another empire and not advance to saint so nobody knows he's one of the heroes and nobody from the empire knows he's alive. Then research a way to solve the issue of him being possessed. What's the point of getting stronger when you're just going to get possessed anyways? If he becomes a saint he'll be on the run constantly so he won't have time to resolve the issue of him being possessed...
