I always liked the idea of him writing his research results on a stone wall inside the statues mouth. Writing on stone would help the information last through time, people can't take it with them making it a one and done for his decedents, and he could have spelled it so it couldn't be destroyed so Tom or any other greedy slitherin couldn't stop other decedents from hogging his inheritance on magic to themselves.
