The safety of stream water depends on several factors, But among those are how far upstream of you the spring/glacier is, how densely populated (and what kind of population) the upstream areas are, and whether you’re native to the area. Spring water and glacial runoff are almost completely safe. you only really have to worry if something pooped in in/nearby the source, but that’s easy enough to see with your eyes. Natives to an area already have much of the antibodies in place to combat the majority of common diseases found in water, but if you’re from out of the country, any non-purified water has a high chance of making you very ill. As for upstream population, Ideally, there’d be none, but especially bad are residential areas with sewage systems that drain into the river (or public toilets that are literally cubicles on a bridge with a hole in the floor, which I have seen first hand), free-range livestock/animals (especially rodents, which are everywhere) ——— If you have anything to add, feel free to add it here, and if I unintentionally said something that’s complete BS, call me out for it!
