… I feel that thousands of viewers smashing their devices at seeing a scarecrow smiling is too exaggerated

No offense but it's a magical fear creature. So let's hands off the realism button a bit.

SageDrunkKitty:It’s been a week or two since I read this chapter, but I believe it said something about at least thousands of people wrecking their own devices from the scare, and showing examples of: Guy sits in front of desk, watching YouTube on his monitor. Plays the video, then slams his fist into the monitor the moment the scarecrow smiles as hard as he can. Shattering the monitor. That and something else about someone throwing their phone away hard. There’s 2 points here. 1, we know it’s real, but the viewers in the story believe it to be just another horror video/film sorta thing, where none of it is real. Just a movie to watch. 2, the degree of the scare/jump scare. Like, for example. There are multiple YouTubers who upload good short 5-10 minute horror videos (no idea what the proper term is). Let’s say I play one (this example video is made up). An ordinary middle aged person waking up for yet another day of work. They brush their teeth, wash their face, etc. Everything completely normal and seemingly peaceful. Then, they walk in front of their mirror, and give themselves a small pep talk, telling themselves that they can do it and achieve their dream. And they leave the room, gathering their stuff and going off to work. However, despite the camera following our protagonist, I see that in the corner of the screen, the mirror is there. And the person’s reflection is still there, inside the mirror, watching our protagonist whose not paying any attention to the mirror, and grinning creepily. The reflection’s eyes just staring at the person as they move around the room. I would flinch/jump in my chair a bit, and be somewhat scared of whether my reflection in the mirror is still watching me even if I turn around, for a few days. But, would I instantly raise my fist and slam it through the monitor the moment I see the reflection stay in the mirror and smile? Of course not. I’m assuming most people wouldn’t do something like obliterating their monitor or giving their pc a roundhouse kick just because of a scare of this level which they believe isn’t a real thing that exists. The phone users I can understand it taking damage, if I flinch/jump a bit while holding a phone, there’s a decent chance it would dropped. And if it hits the floor wrong (depends if carpet or concrete too), the screen will have a few cracks. However, one would have to raise their hand and throw the phone down hard, for there to be a chance of it being damage to the point that it doesn’t even work anymore. However, the story is saying thousands to tens of thousands of youtube viewers completely wrecked their devices (assuming both phones, monitors/pcs, and iPads) the moment the scarecrow smiled. Which sounds like nonsense. And considering it with common sense, it is nonsense. I believe that they’re scared. But I don’t believe that many people were terrified to the point of breaking their devices to no longer see the video of the scary smiling scarecrow.

I think the most frightened people are the video creators.
