The laws and everything don’t make this feel like the US at all. You’re not an adult if you’re 17, you have to pay a ton of money to adopt someone and go through a lot of protocol with various stages of adoption, etc. You don’t get money from the government unless you do foster care instead. This setting would make a lot more sense if it were a different world. Otherwise, the author should do more research in the future to show respect to other cultures.
