I really hope he doesn't join her. it's just too linear and predictable. I hope he escapes. It would be symbolic of the story escaping mediocrity.

Not used to the MC thinking ahead reasonably like this. His small mistakes as explained by the old man make him nicely human and immature, reflecting his (lack of)battle experience and young age, so I have high hopes so far.
