Okay interesting I whould say if I was in his position I whould bait the monsters into the building so that I can continuously evolve the weapon while burning the floors so That the goblins can't move as well anymore. For the winged beast I whould use my chain to grab the neck and make it aim downward then kill it a reasonable height and fall down and kill the monsters and evolve my chain. Also with the cape why could the winged beast see him. But the story is good I expect good things from the book.
