I'm trying to recall where I've inserted the hints and failing miserably because my memory is like a sponge, full of holes. Nevertheless, I intended for him to be a shifter right from the beginning. And expanding on the previous comment, there's different types of magic - demonic, the arcane, shifting, sacred, etc. I avoided explaining theory and history of magic because it otherwise gets too deep into what I considered unnecessary info.
