What a BS backstory If the rumor only spread among school students then I can get it, but when it was spread to the entire city (or even world) and people actually believing it with out any evidence is just BS If the rumor of him being a rapist spread around the city then cops will definitely take him for interrogation When they found out there's no evidence about the rumor the cops will change target to the one who spread the rumor and interrogate the girl, the cops definitely will found out that she is lying about the rumor After that the girl and the guy will get arrested for defamation When creating backstory put at least some common sense in it, don't just make it just for the sake of giving the MC tragic backstory

Biggest plothole: no evidence, cops merely rumors He just happened to see and hear them trashtalking him the first time

At least record their conversation. It is the age of technology and almost all human have their gadgets with them all the time. So record their conversation as an evidence and not just stand there in the corner listening to them framing you up without doing anything.
