In Ramayana, when Lord Ram prayed to Ma Durga so that he could defeat Ravan , he had to offer 108 blue lotus. To test the sincerety of Lord Ram , Ma Durga deliberately hid one lotus. Because blue lotus are very rare. Lord Ram was famous for his eyes, and his eyes were known to have lotus shape. So, to do the prayer in a perfect way and make up the lost lotus , Lord Ram wanted to gauge out his own eye. After seeing such devotion, Ma Durga was pleased with him, stopped him and granted him blessings so that he could defeat Ravana.Just another anecdote from Indian Mythology about the number 108. 😃
