To add more flavor you can add a apprisIal feature to the system that lets him see others stats and even grade potential. I’ll advise that you keep the 1-10 level system until the end of Middle school. Than change to a tier system based of College recuits stats ( Of course based off this universe standards) so like 1-5 star. In college you can change it (upgrade the system).You can Add perks from the system like special moves and give them grades like badges in 2k. He be able to see other players badges and skill level too. Some would all have basic badges and some will have super unique badges. It can go from Bronze , Sliver, Gold, Platnium, and Hall Of Fame. They have 1-5 star rating in each rank. Middle school most people have no badges maybe a Bronze. High school will have some with bronze and top prospects with at least 3 silver at 2 Stars. College mostly have a Lottery pick with 1 or 2 low Gold stars. Nba starters have a least 1 Platnium 1 star. NBA All-Stars would mostly 4-5 Star Platnium and at leat 1 HOF. First-Team Both offensive or Defense would have at least 1 4-5 star HOF. He can have missions to earn badges slots and to upgrade them and use system points to buy badges as some unique ones would cost more than others and to upgrade them he can use system points and train them. To Upgrade a badge to a new tier he has to meet both stat requirements and pass a mission assigned by the system. To make more challenging for him add more people to the generation of miracle standards like characters from other sports anime like slam dunk and prince of tennis, Baki, etc. You can use the charcters temples in their sports and make them the basketball equivalent. Like the pitcher from Ace of Diamonds can be clutch southpaw shooter instead. This way you can give the high school and even college arcs more depth in competition and he not just some OP baller. Or even make old legendary players part of his generation like jerry west and bill russel. They can be his world stage competition when he gets to college or even youth national team competitions. You a have a great story with lots of potential, so I hope this helps.
Finally remember to show other people stats too. One thing about system novels people forget is that the levels don’t mean anything if their is no reference or others to compare too. Knowing he has a level 6 Shooting is nice and all but it doesn’t help me understand what it means in comparison to others on if that really good or bad. Him being a lvl 6 in middle school shooting 50% shouldn’t be the same standard as him going against higher level competition. Which is why you should change the system to either show that ( so have level 6 ( middle school tier)) or something like ( Shooting 3 star (High-School) 0/1,000) This way you can gauge how good he is in comparisons. For ranks they can be like this ( Middle school, High-School, College, G-League/Overseas, Nba, All-Star, Legend) still keep 1-5 stars. If you want his stats page to be more you can use some if the 2k attributes and make a categories like offense, defense and general tabs. Offense would have passing, layup, dunk, shooting, and dribble. Defense can have Steal and Block. General have Basketball IQ, AthletIsm, Speed/quickness, Rebounding. With this when you show other players stats it clear on everyone power level and whats happening and with the badges as wild cards. So say he has a 4 star High school shooting and his opponent has a 2-star College blocking. You can now see clearly how challenging it maybe so you can write how he overcome that through say a Badge or having a high stat in another attribute like say 2-star College dribbling, so he breakdown the defender or create space to help his shooting. say he had a 2-star sliver contested shooting badge too. With things like this for the system you can have him use his brain more to and have option to write with more strategy and give more reasoning why he play or do a certain thing. Also you make it were this world is heavy invested in sports. So they have like different rankings systems for players. So like when he gets into highschool he can see his ranking within his class in the country than the world. Thsm college would have its own ranks system too. With this you csn use it to introduce new characters like old legends, his nba class, or remodeled Sport anime characters. If anything you shouldnt gave problem with not have enough characters in your story.
