He isn't really even "relying on his own ability" and even if he was, its stupid to do that. Those free rare materials for the legendary upgrades saved him a huge amount of time and effort. Not using the knowledge and help from one of the strongest people isn't something to be proud of, it's just wasteful and dumb. So he's got the best of both worlds. He's not actually independent and he's not using the resources available to him effectively...lol
