I was hoping that it wasn't going this way, that Merlin was just an homage to that story (the answer would have been obvious if I'd remembered that Merlin's druid/real name was Emrys, the anglecized version of which would be Ambosious), but no, it's just another gods damned variant, no, what am I saying, "fresh take" on merlin. it's been done, and redone, and done some more, nothing much fresh about it anymore. Dropped.
