ScribeSaga2:Thanks :) I'll try to explain. The world she lives in is haunted by creatures known as Skitters, they are also called 'the soulless'. They are a remnant of a period of time called 'the long night'. The long night happened mysteriously decades ago and made it so the entire world was clouded by a long night and creatures of nightmares walked the world. No one knows exactly why or how it happened but it broke most nations and countries apart. The long night is over but the Skitters remained and continue to prey upon humans. Keri lives in a city that has walled itself off from the rest of the world. I probably should've added more context about this in the second book, its talked about in the first book a lot. The shadow is a mysterious skitter that has shed its physical form and is drawn to her. It wants her to be a birthing unit for its offspring.
