I wonder if the witch - to make the potion - had to suck the life force out of the villagers, making them into these zombie-like people. Or, maybe, the abandoned church hides one of the black magic orbs and the witch, in trying to access its power, was exposing the villagers to its evil effects. Maybe that statue was a final guard protecting the orb. AGH!! I love this novel so much -- I just want to read more! <3 Thank you, author!
