Comments of chapter undefined of Death... and me

I'll never understand the way modesty is presented in eastern themed novels. Even ignoring the fact that we are talking about some 10 year old kid and assuming everyone knew about his 'real' age, is the practice of medicine and administration of life-saving procedures 'really' the kind of thing to interrupt due to potential embarrassment. I mean, we are talking about a decade of suffering and potential death vs a couple days with a doctor's hand near your chest. In what world is this even a question?
