Oh okay, I thought the group holding the mercenaries prisoner was different than the one killing them to take their blood. Mainly because it did not make sense to me why they would not just kill them on the spot and then transport their bodies back to the city. It seems like they are the same group and maybe the reason they were holding them prisoner was the difficulty of transporting so many corpses at once in a timely manner to the city.
