Ummm, I hate to be that guy but no, black is a terrible choice for stealth, even at night. The black pajamas you often see ninjas wear on TV is just as fictional as the magic ninjas use in Naruto because black actually stands out in contrast to the night sky. As a certain goomba likes to say, "Real Ninjas wear blue!"
Eh. Gotta keep in mind that not every world is as light polluted as ours. In a more medieval world where street lights aren't every 20 meters, and torches are likely similarly uncommon, black should be pretty good. At least if it's not a full moon too. On the other hand, in that case, black is good because it's the same color as the pitch-black surroundings, in which case you can't see anything else either :D so yeah it should be decent but not the best.
