Plus they aren’t any sort of shackle. Unless you’re being sarcastic, and it went over my head (ignore my comment if that’s the case), his astral souls have obviously brought him this far with their sentience. Apart from the shear cultivation benefits, their instincts towards their dao have led him on an optimal path. For someone treading unknown territory in cultivation, having sentient souls that each govern an aspect of his cultivation literally lets him know what’s good and what isn’t.
