I had only one thought: "What kind of crap did I just read?" I'm talking about the scene with the wand.

This scene is literally just to introduce Dumbledore. It shows, in this novel, he's not an evil, scheming bastard. That's why he doesn't take the wand, he just sends it back home because it's too dangerous to have in a school, in a 12 year old child's hands.
