Comments of chapter undefined of The Oracle Paths

The chapter might be a bit confusing; I'll rework it a bit tomorrow. In summary, the fleeing army rushing towards them was under bombardment during their escape, but the arrows targeting them covered such a wide area that they reached Jake's regiment before they did. To go back to the introduction of the chapter, when Jake and his regiment finally encounter the pursued army, he's basically the only one still standing, or nearly so.
