No good deed goes unpunished. On a more thoughtful note, I thought the villain was going to do him a good turn on a whim, but his response turned the villain's actions to evil. Rather surprised by this, since usually someone the MC helps out in a story is either a plot mechanic or is very grateful.

There's something fishy about that sutra. (Could it be a sutra girl?)

I'm bothered when a protagonist gets multiple cheats shoved onto him from different sources for no connected reason--oh hey, world-shaking artifact AND new in-law connections AND eccentric grandpa encounter. I much prefer it when a protagonist gets a single edge over others, then uses his wits to exploit it to its full potential and overcome everyone else in the world. I had hoped that the new in-law connections would turn out to be a scheme to get an artifact actually hidden inside the phone (thus only a single special thing about him after all), but this new encounter has nothing to do with anything else, and is just the author shoving new cheats down his throat from the heavens above...
