I'm assuming she liked him when she was younger but was either ignored or rejected. ML probably didn't like that she was somewhat an attention-seeker or people-pleaser back then. He knew her well since she was friends with his sister. He likes her now though. (This is also my guess as to why she hates him; referring to author's question a few chapters back 😁)

I’m so glad he pointed out the obvious here, that she needs to learn how to both step back and also love herself even if she’s not doing anything.
