Sigh, what a complicated person the emperor was. But it is not surprising his attempts to show love or make his sons stronger became abusive. It seems like he grew up with an abusive father himself, so he did not learn proper parenting skills. I guess he treated his daughter nicely and spoilt her because he didn't think she needed to be stronger, she was just a vase to be maintained until she is married to the appropriate man.
