I think Damien deliberately sent Penny out so she wouldn't witness him defending the slave

It diffidently seemed like he was protecting penny from seeing the slave girl get whipped and also he actually protected the slave girl by voicing out that the mistress made a mistake and that she punished her slave for no reason

So far this book has kept me very interested and on my toes as an avid reader. Reading a book that actually gives you not only a good story line but also a look into both main characters minds is refreshing
