Nan Nan is really in a bad situation. I understand that everyone is upset about her family and would want her to leave, but due to reasons she can’t. First, the setting is China in the 1970s/1980s. Unlike the age that we live now, she is limited by the restrictions placed then. She is subjected to the cultural norms held by the adults and her family during that era. If she were to act out in a way not subjected to the standard, she probably would be isolated or treated as unfilial to her family thereby limiting her chances. Due to her rebirth, she has learned so she won’t be fooled. She can’t act out with her emotions and must subscribe to the most useful role in order to further her goals. She acts /has the role of the diligent student so that she wins the attention of the teachers and other important figures. She knows that through education, she can provide a way for her to escape her family. So she tries to maintain good relationships with the administrators and other people to improve her chances. Another reason is that though Elder Lee sympathize with her and tries to let her father understand that what he is doing is wrong, he is in no way responsible for her. He for the most part is looking after his own interests that being his grandson. He probably won’t get involved until she provides the results that he wants. Also, say that she did successfully get away from her family during her school years ( middle school/high school), where would she go? She has no resources to depend on. And even if she got a job, saving up for the big move, where would she hide the money?Remember, she lives in a small town where everyone knows about everyone. Who is to say that a well meaning neighbor won’t snitch on her to the family, opening another can of worms. There are other reasons why she can’t unfortunately leave, but I going to stop for now. It’s frustrating that this is happening, but hopefully she will make it through.

I take back what I said, for **** sake both parents are just such dissapointment. You know my psychology teacher said the mother has some mental illness when I asked her if there was disorders like that. Honestly the sentence where it's Nan Nan's bad luck to have a mother like Old Ding was so flipping right. People don't deserve parents like that unfortunately we don't choose our parents ಠಿ_ಠ I just feel like they should just die, she is better of being an orphan than having parents like that. To be honest they are both horrible it’s just the mother shows as directly while the father doesn’t and that’s the worst part we think he is helping her but he is only doing it for his pride he is just as bad as the mom or even worse because he is lying to himself

I still don't get why he was angry with Nan Nan in the first place. He's really muddle headed. I don't want to believe this sudden improvement of his will last three days later. Lol We'll see.
