This author's idea of writing a webnovel for self-insertion and self-fulfilment completely clashes with the concept of western novels. While its true that this kind of self-insert genre tends to get a lot of shallow readers who will quickly pick up your novel, the readers are also quite shallow in that they will happily drop a novel if it gets too tedious or the leaps of logic are too overboard. This article is basically telling you how to create a Mary Sue character.
I suddenly feel embarrassed writing webnovels. It's almost like pleasing someone else's fantasies without regard to how ridiculous what you are writing is. Isn't there more to writing than just pushing another to climax? Aren't there nobler goals to pursue when writing? Why does this chapter make it seem all writers exist for is to create a pleasing s*x doll???
Good points on self fulfillment nothing new but as this is aimed for newer authors a nice thing to think about for sure. I don't exactly agree on the other two parts. I also think its pointless to even trying to categorize authors into levels. The world of literature is a lot bigger than one might believe. IMO it doesn't fit into level boxes. If one tries it, they will usually just limit their perception to what is well known but will often miss taking note of something different but nonetheless interesting just because it doesn't fit into a box.
Thank you. Great chapter and it basically put into words something I was subconciously trying to balance when writing and rereading my chapters. And for those that think this can make a mary sue character, your right. But at the same time, what if you add some downsides to the cheat and consequences to the miracle to add realism and immersibility. This guy is teaching the basics of the basics. And that starts with getting people to actually read the book.
Wow~! I think I have just gained a very significant understanding of what really makes stories online work. In simpler terms, I think in order for a webnovel to gain attention and eventual traction is for it to be relatable, simple and enjoyable to read. Make it too complex and you lose your readers. :)
