1 Year of Beginning

“Give me one year of your life and I’ll give you the money you need.” Feng Mian is a normal and down to earth modern woman. She just wanted an ordinary life, an ordinary job and find an ordinary man to marry in the future. (Yes, all should be ordinary). But when family matters took a turn for the worst, she faced a huge dilemma called shortage of money. Suddenly, a contract came due to a series of coincidences. Zhang Liang was fed up with his father's (yes, father not mother) matchmaking schemes for him. He wanted to have a peaceful year because this was his chance to expand his business overseas, yet his father didn’t seem to get the message. When an ordinary fresh graduate employee in his company accidentally saw a scene, he decided to take the chance. “Since she has a normal background with nothing remarkable, nothing should go wrong, right?” Browsing through the contract, Feng Mian gritted her teeth. 'Fine. It was just one year of my life anyway. I wouldn't lose a lot.' But was it true? Or would that one year turn out to be a ride full of ups and down for both of them? ... Story set in modern era in fictional country. This story is purely fiction, any similarities with real life's event is purely coincidence. Operation

Feng Mian really felt refreshed after having enough sleep for two days straight. Working in Zhang Liang's company already gave her a lot of sleepless nights because of work. Thankfully, she had already finished her part, or she wouldn't be able to be so free right now.

"You're surprisingly sensitive to alarm." Zhang Liang sat up. He eyed Feng Mian. "That it's weird for you to be known for your lateness."

"…How did you even know that?"

Right now, Feng Mian really wishes to face palm. If even the president knew about her miraculous record of being late from time to time, just how bad was it? Feng Mian wanted to cry.

"An employee complained to the director about an intern that's often late," Zhang Liang replied. "I was present at that time. There was a brief discussion whether to fire you or not but everyone decided not to because your work is pretty good."

Feng Mian smiled bitterly. She was thankful that she always did her work well or she might have already lost her job from a long time ago. Looking at Zhang Liang getting ready, she thought about something.

"Right, can I visit my mother? I need to ask the Doctor about the suitable kidney for her."

"They should have found a donor by now," Zhang Liang paused for a bit. "You might need to finish the paperwork soon."

"Really?" Feng Mian's eyes lit up.

"Yes."

"Did you have something to do with it?"

Zhang Liang shrugged. He didn't reply as he got into the bathroom.

Seeing that, Feng Mian knew that she wouldn't get any answer even if she tried to ask. Her lips curled up into a smile. Even though she had a bad impression of him when they first met back then and even for the next few days with their meeting and his acting, it didn't turn out as bad as she thought. At the very least, her mother's operation could be done quickly.

Just like what Zhang Liang told her, Feng Mian received a phone call not long after she had finished her breakfast.

"Butler Lou, I need to go to the hospital."

"I'll prepare a car."

"Eh, I can use public…."

"As the madam of Zhang Family, I'm sure that a car will be more suitable." Butler Lou was smiling, yet Feng Mian felt a chill running on her spine. There was no other choice for her but to nod her head repeatedly, agreeing to Butler Lou's arrangement.

'The butler is as scary as the master!'

It didn't even take five minutes for a car to be ready. Feng Mian tried not to count the price of the car as she entered the backseat. Her eyes glanced to the driver as she gave the order.

"To Hospital F, please."

"Yes Madam."

The journey was smooth. Feng Mian was stunned at the clear time difference compared to when she took public transportation. It seemed that there were times when cars were more convenient.

"Doctor, how's the operation?" Feng Mian asked as she walked to the counter.

"Please wait a bit more. It's still in process, so please sign the document first."

"Ah, ok."

Feng Mian went through some papers. Since she had already handled it once before in the past, she could check much faster now because she knew which point she needed to focus on.

After the document was done, Feng Mian waited painfully for the operation to finish. The minute-like hours passed slowly. Feng Mian couldn't do anything but pacing around the hallway like an idiot.

'She'll be fine…'

Klek!

Feng Mian didn't know how much time had passed when the doctor walked out of the operation room. He took off his masker while smiling. "Don't worry Miss Feng, Madam Lin is fine."

"Thank you very much!" Feng Mian was overjoyed. That meant the operation was successful!

"Can I…?"

"Please wait until we move her back to her room."

"Ah, ok."

Since Feng Mian had known that her mother's operation was successful, she was no longer as anxious as before. After a few minutes, she entered the room. Her eyes landed on her sleeping mother as a smile appeared on her lips.

Slowly, she pulled a chair and sat down. Her hand stretched out to grab her mother's hand.

"Mom, hopefully there won't be any other complications this time. Please stay with me."

Feng Mian lowered her head and lightly touched her mother's hand to her forehead while praying. She didn't want to lose her mother, so she hoped that her mother could live for a long time.
