Chapter 5

CLAUDIA'S POV

After hearing from April, I decided to call Janice. I didn't want to ask her anything since she also complained of having issues with paying her rent.

While she still hadn't finished up her student loan, same as me. Most of whatever pay she got from the company goes to settle the student loan anyway.

"Hey girl. What's good?"I heard her ask after picking up the third ring.

"I need your help Janny. Something came up…", i said to her and began to explain the situation at home to her.

"Wow. I am so sorry to hear that Claudie. I mean, it's been only a few hours since we separated and all this happened?

So, what do we do now? That bill is too much. That is like two or three years of your salary if I am not mistaken…", Janice said, lamenting on my behalf.

"So what do we do now Janice? I am so out of ideas", I said to her, finally having the strength to walk home.

"It's night already and I don't even think my aunt will be able to get a loan for you. You know, she is no longer working at the loan company. I also asked her to help but she couldn't render any assistance due to the company's new policy",

I heard Janice say and I let out a frustrated sigh.

"What to do Janice?" I said with a shaky voice as a few seconds of silence followed from Janice's side before she spoke again.

"I have an idea", i heard her say while i opened our house door.

"And what is that?", I asked, taking my seat on the couch.

"Why don't you talk to the boss? I mean, Mr Hunter has been so good and caring to you than the rest of us and as the CEO, I know he would be able to render you this help"

I heard Janice say and I immediately shook my head at the idea and retorted.

"And what sort of help do you think he of all people can render without wanting something in return?"

"You can tell him to give you a salary advance and you sign a contract with him so he won't think you will run away with the money…",

Janice suggested, and I began to see the point in what she said. However, my bubbles of hope immediately got punctured the moment i remembered what happened earlier this evening.

"....that is the only thing i think can help now. At least, he gives you money and you sign a contract to show you will work till the debt is paid off. It's a win-win for you two", I heard Janice say again.

"It would have been so easy to ask if i hadn't slapped him this evening…", i said absent mindedly and heard Janice scream from the other side.

"You what?", she asked again.

It was until then I noticed I had said my thoughts out loud. Speechless, all I did was gulp.

"I knew it! I knew something was off and I can't believe you lied to me. You had better start talking now so we find a way about it",

I heard Janice say and I finally let the cat out the bag by spilling every little detail, leaving no stone unturned.

CLAUDIA'S POV

Morning came and I would be a liar if I said I slept well through the night. After talking to Janice, I informed my mother about the ambiguous bill we had to pay and she of course got extremely worried.

I calmed her down and told her I had things under control. I did this just so she would not get worried and she agreed.

Getting up from my bed, I walked to my dresser and stared hard at the mirror. I could see some dark circles on my face which I am sure will be gone soon with a little touch of concealer.

Without wasting much time, I got into the bathroom and got ready as quickly as possible.

Janice and I met at the bus station as always and we got into the bus the moment it arrived.

"Remember, act cool the moment you get to the office, prepare his cup of coffee and apologize to him.

Kneel if you can because at the end of the day, it will all be worth it when you see Uncle hale and hearty",

she said to me frankly, like i would forget all we had planned last night.

I went into the elevator in a solemn mood, hoping and wishing that everything would go perfectly.

Ignoring the fast racing of my heart, I stepped out of the elevator and walked right to my desk.

I had not even dropped my bag when I heard the intercom ring. Dropping my bag, I put the phone in my ear and froze the moment I heard Mr Hunter speak.

"Miss Claudia, meet me in my office, now", was what i heard and then the call ended.

''What? Why is he so early today too?'', I thought to myself, but was quick to reprimand myself at the same time.

''That is not what you are supposed to be thinking about now Claudia. You should be worried about your job'', I thought to myself before getting up.

''Is he about to sack me? Am I really going to lose my job?'' I asked myself but could not find the perfect answer as I opened his office door.

I saw him staring out the glass walls of his door but he turned the moment he heard me come in.

"Have your seat", he said and I did without complaint.

"There is something i want to discuss with you", i heard him say but i immediately rose.

"Please Mr Hunter. I am so sorry to cut you off but hear me out first", I said to him hurriedly, cutting him off from his words.

"Go on…", I heard him say to me coldly and I immediately rambled on as planned.

Apologizing first and then telling him about my family's current situation. I watched every one of his expressions as I spoke before finally dropping my request.

A few seconds of silence followed as I told him to give me a salary advance but that silence didn't reign for long as he suddenly burst into laughter then stopped as his cold aura returned once again.

"Fair enough! I can offer you a contract which you must sign right away. I'm a busy man, and you know it. However, it's not the type of contract you want", I heard him say.
