Chapter Nine: “Taking Care of Things”

I woke up the next morning and he wasn't by my side. I turned around and he had left a note for me saying, "Left for work early, see you later. -Chris". I felt amazing, yesterday was the best night of my life. I felt bad I had missed my dad blowing his candles but it was worth it.

I've never been in a relationship that lasts, over these past five years in L.A. I've had four boyfriends, they all broke up with me for the same reason, I always wanted to save my self after marriage, but this time something with Chris was different. Chris has only been with three people in his life, his wife Ally, Veronica and now with me.

Chris started calling me, I answered and he invited me for dinner in my last day in Boston, I was feeling upset I was leaving so soon, but having the thought of Chris on my mind made me feel better. Before I left Boston I had to make things right with Veronica, I still felt bad for her. She must feel lonely.

I got dressed and left my parents house, I took my moms old car and I drove to Veronicas house. I arrived at her house, it seemed like she had company, I couldn't recognize the car, I guess it was another of her friends. I got out of my car and approached her door steps, her door opens and she hugged goodbye a guy I never met before.

-"Lily? What are you doing here?." She asked me, calmly.

-"I just came to say goodbye, I'm leaving tomorrow to L.A." I answered her.

She waved me in and went inside to make some coffee.

-"Lily, I'm not mad at you anymore." she said.

-"you aren't?" I asked her, finding it very suspiciously.

-"no, I'm just relieved you're leaving. I know Chris is gonna come back right after you leave for L.A. He doesn't like distance relationships." She said to me with a smile of evil on her face, hoping to make me feel insecure.

I get up from her couch and look at her, I didn't want to say anything to her. I just felt insecure and hoping that everything she said was a lie.

-"what's your problem? I come here to tell you I'm sorry for what I did and you just slam things like that right at me?"I said to her, as I got up and left her house.

She ran towards me and and said, "I knew you'd never last, relationships like yours are boring, and he would eventually get tired of you." I wanted to say terrible things at her but I couldn't, I knew she was hurt and I didn't want to hurt her even more.

As I drove home to pack my bags for my early flight tomorrow, I couldn't stop thinking about what she said to me about Chris running to her after I leave. In that moment I knew I had to make a life changing decision that would take me a time to figure out. I got home and my brothers car wasn't there, he said that he would wait for me to eat breakfast together one last time before I left, but it was already too late. Chris was calling me but I didn't want to answer, I was still thinking about how our relationship would turn out if I left Boston. He left a voice message after I didn't answer him, as I was distracted thinking.
