Chapter 38: Danger

[Ayanokouji]

"—I alone am enough."

Both I and Horikita had no words to offer in opposition and he simply disappeared.

When I previously wondered why he was still willing to expel Ike, Yamauchi, and Sudo despite the 300-point demerits I had thought it was either because he was confident or that our class points wouldn't drop into the negatives.

But I was wrong.

It was both.

I sighed after helping Horikita up and looked up at the night sky. The moon was particularly bright today, it was beautiful.

Maybe I could have considered this as a little date or rendezvous with Horikita if not for the whole Student Council President and Tatsuya fiasco.

Well, who am I kidding that wasn't possible.

I looked toward Horikita.

She was particularly shaken by the sudden assault.

She wasn't wrong in trying to record their conversation. In fact, it was a brilliant move. For a second I thought Tatsuya had become arrogant and missed how oddly Horikita was acting.

But I guess that wasn't the case.

Tatsuya didn't care whether she was recording or not from the start.

At first, I was confused as to why he suddenly lunged at Horikita but sensing the danger I instinctively caught his hand.

I remembered that he said Martial Arts was one of his hobbies so I was on guard but even I wasn't ready for the sudden kick.

His limbs were particularly long and I didn't have time to duck or fall back because that would leave me open or he might attack Horikita again.

So I crossed my hands in front of my chest, hoping to stay in the same place in case he tried attacking Horikita again.

But that strength...

Even now my forearms were tingling from the aftermath. I wonder if it will be bruised by tomorrow.

I massaged the area that was aching, "Are you okay, Horikita?"

She seemed to have just realized that I was also here, ouch.

"I-... I'm fine." She muttered before shaking her head, "No, rather are you f-fine?"

By the time she finished speaking, I presume she remembered exactly what happened. It must've been visually shocking to see another fellow human fly away, like what happened in action movies.

If it were anyone else besides me they wouldn't have escaped without a pair of broken arms. I guess he must've taken my Whiteroom background into account.

This line of thought brought me back to the conversation we had before his attack. Had he intentionally brought up the topic of how I should join the gym back?

Was he trying to hint that the current me was not his match?

He must be really really strong if he can say those words while knowing my past. Is he from an influential family or maybe one of the investors?

I can't see otherwise how he knows about the Whiteroom.

I also considered the fact that he may be from the 5th Generation if he faked his age but that possibility was extremely slim.

After all, no one from the Whiteroom cou-

"Ayanokouji-kun?" Horikita's concerned voice brought me back to reality.

Oh... I was lost in thought.

"No don't worry. It hurts but I should be fine." I tried to add pain to my voice but I don't know if that worked.

"I-" Horikita parted her lips but the look on her face made it obvious what she was about to say.

"You don't need to apologize or feel guilty. It's not your fault. Trying to record the conversation was the right move and the things he said were particularly useful, it was a good plan. I guess we both underestimated him."

Was it a random guess or did Horikita's behaviour tip him off? Currently, that was unknown but I'm sure Horikita was thinking it was her fault.

The usual Horikita wouldn't have thought like that, did meeting her brother have that big of an impact on her?

"For now we have to deal with this problem. Are you really against his plan or did you simply act like that to make sure you didn't look too bad yourself in the recording?"

"No, I still don't agree with his plan. I don't know about Ike or Yamauchi but Sudo is a very valuable asset I can't have him drop out."

This was incredibly odd.

No, it was basically out of character. Even though I didn't want to I subconsciously analyzed her behaviour, speech, and the previous few interactions we just had before arriving at a simple conclusion.

"Is the reason your brother?"

Horikita flinched rather abruptly before shooting me a glare, "You...!"

Looks like I hit the mark.

"I guess unwillingly a part of you believes that Tatsuya can back his words. If Tatsuya can bring the Class to Class A that would be great overall but in the end you wouldn't get the acknowledgement you desire from your brother."

Horikita looked at me silently.

Did I overdo it? Is she thinking I'm creepy or something?

Well, I don't blame her.

In the end, Horikita averted her gaze, "Think what you wish but I will make sure no one is expelled."

I guess her confidence really had taken a sharp hit if she couldn't even look me in the eye while talking.

"I..." Horikita looked into her phone, "I'll be going back to my room. What about you?"

"I still haven't had dinner. I was thinking of getting some groceries before heading back."

"I see... Then I'll be heading back. Do visit the infirmary if it hurts too much." With those words, she left me alone in the night.

How cruel.

Just kidding, but was that concern she showed towards me in the end?

Well, it was probably guilt of having me save her twice.

I wonder how she'll handle Tatsuya.

It was going to be incredibly troublesome...

I could probably help Horikita and try to make sure he can't expel them during the exams but if Tatsuya was hell-bent on having them gone then this was going to be a rather destructive journey for both me and Horikita.

Horikita didn't realise it but Tatsuya never explicitly stated that he would have them expelled during the exams.

You can save them once, you might even save them twice.

But Horikita...

Even if you win the battle you will lose the war.

Yamamoto Tatsuya had one goal in mind and if he achieved that goal then it would result in your death.

"I hope you realize it before it's too late Horikita...If you don't Tatsuya will eat you alive." I muttered to myself in apprehension.

This wouldn't do... I can't have her mentally breaking down just yet.

...

Tatsuya walked back to the dorms and entered the elevator.

He pushed the button and the lift closed with him as the sole passenger.

Just before when he was talking with Horikita he actually wasn't sure if she was recording or not.

He wasn't some genius mastermind, he wasn't some master observer nor was he someone amazing.

He was just one lucky soul that got picked from Earth.

The only reason he took action was out of caution since audio recording was a very common and overused trope in Classroom of The Elite.

Though it could be that the little Whiteroom devil was also recording but that possibility was pretty slim and even if he was recording there was zero chance he would share it.

Not only did Tatsuya know of his past but Ayanokouji was also unaware of his true motives.

Ayanokouji, who desired peace and freedom, wouldn't act against him for now.

He also couldn't hoodwink him using Horikta as an excuse in case the audio was somehow leaked since only Horikita and Ayanokouji were present during the conversation and Tatsuya had already checked Horikita's phone.

It wouldn't be long before he tore Horikita to pieces but before that, he should have some fun and relax.

A few dozen or so seconds later the lift panel displayed the number "12" and stopped.

He got off and headed towards a certain dorm room and opened it using the key. Thankfully no one was in the lobby right now.

He then smiled at the sight of the still unconscious blonde girl sleeping on her bed.
