Training Camp

McBride and Rogers.

Those were two names repeatedly screamed by drill sergeants on camp Lehigh.

Rogers, because he was repeatedly pathetic and holding everyone back, always messing up and being clumsy.

McBride, because he was lazy, undisciplined, doesn't take the Drill Sergeant seriously, while also staying behind with the scrawny Steve.

He's title of being a bully came back to him, and he messed with some of the recruits and all, because they once tried to target Steve, but Alfie payed them back almost 10x more.

Now Steve had more space and time to do his thing.

After passing the enlistment tests with flying colors Alfie talked to most of his friends in The Bronx.

The closest ones Alfie was with had separated and moved on, while most of the others went to college.

Timmy, Rolo, Jonjon along with Billy have been recruited to play baseball in college, they were recruited due to their skills in highschool.

Alfie was also sought after but he rejected them saying he had his own plans, many of the college ball recruiters were disappointed since Alfie has been a long time captain for the James Madison Highschool baseball team, and with him they had streaks of wins since freshmen year.

Luckily for them the others were more than happy to play pro ball in the big leagues, or at least the college leagues.

Everything was going fine for them, but Billy and Rolo would have hard times here and there considering Billy is black and Rolo is hispanic.

But their skills can't be joked about, even the others that play ball in the Morris Wolves have opportunities in the ball game.

But what most baseball fans hate more than colored people was women playing ball in the mens league.

Rose thought she could get a chance, but the ball recruiters didn't even bat an eye at her, even if she was the 2nd best player in the team right after Alfie.

But now she was playing softball with women and Rose honestly feels frustrated, she liked being around the women team ball players but she would rather play with baseball and be with the mens league.

Every once in a while the team would gather up again at Alfie's work, The Blue Ribbon, and they would catch up.

But the last time they got together like that Alfie told them his plans to be in the military has finally come.

They spent the night at that restaurant after the owner allowed it, the owner also gave Alfie a farewell.

Some couldn't make it so it was only about 40 and some young people now.

Some even thought about joining the war, Alfie said that if they ever did then he would wait for them.

After them was Alfie's parents.

Alfie started to see wrinkles on them as they got older.

When Alfie told them about his military plans they outright denied his plans.

Not only because the war started but because the rate at which soldiers are dying is not low.

It took hours to talk and convince the two.

Alfie feels bad for the two, they were his parents and the only one he knew.

But Alfie guaranteed them that he will be fine, he doesn't plan on dying, he just wanted to lived a life on the edge, a life of risky fun.

It wasn't until night that his parents realize that Alfie wasn't budging from his decisions, so they made Alfie promise he will come back, and he promised.

The next day Alfie and Steve was transported in bus to the State of Virginia.

Alfie and Steve then met their Drill Sergeant Mike Duffy, the Sergeant was serious but to Alfie he somehow looked funny, including his sometimes off tone voice.

As they settled in Steve got some attention from the other recruits, Alfie noticed but only waited until they tried something.

He loved when Steve gets some attention like that, it just means more fights for him.

Other than bumping shoulders nothing much happened to Steve.

And Steve was already immune to those kinds of petty things.

They were soon told to gear up and head out to meet the officers in charge.

The recruits don't know, other than Alfie, but this division of recruits were picked to be tests to the Rebirth Project, a.k.a. the Super Soldier Program.

The Drill Sergeant told us to march to an open area and line up there, everyone rushed but Alfie just walked, but not too slowly either.

That was when the Drill Sergeant called his last name to hurry it up.

As they lined up and wait a woman showed up.

It was Agent Peggy Carter.

A real fire that one.

As she spoke up a recruit by the name of Hodge decided to speak up and slander her because she was a women.

Once she asked Hodge to step up and he sucker punched him knocking him on his bum.

Alfie couldn't hold it and snickered a bit.

Peggy glared at Alfie asking if something is funny, Alfie zipped his mouth immediately.

Not long Colonel Phillips arrived along with Doctor Erskine and an unnamed unimportant side officer character that doesn't matter.

The Colonel in charge of this camp made his speech about being the best man and how they were gonna get better.

••••••

On their first day of training and running 5 miles around a big track.

Everyone was up and good but in the back was a tired Steve and Alfie along with him picking his nose.

Steve told Alfie to go ahead and not to piss the Drill Sergeant off.

But Alfie said no and stuck with him as Drill Sergeant Duffy yelled at the two for being slow.

Halfway there they took a pause to take a rest, Alfie saw the flag that steve was suppose to grab smartly on the movie, but today wasn't the day.

As Alfie and Steve caught up to the rest Sergeant Duffy did some lecture of how the two needs to keep up.

But something happened inside Alfie...

Alfie bent down to Steve and whispered something, Steve looked at Alfie weirdly.

Before Sergeant Duffy can yell anymore he saw Alfie passed him faster than he has ever seen anyone run and went to the base before anyone.

Alfie ran like his life depended on him ignoring his Drill Sergeants calling his last name.

Sergeant Duffy looked back at Steve for an answer but all Steve said was that Alfie had to take a shitt.

By the time they got to the base they saw Alfie out of the showers with a towel covering his hips down.

It was only the first day but Sergeant Duffy said McBride more than a hundred times in frustration.

Alfie was thinking that Steve only spend about a week before going off to get his super potion.

As time went on Alfie realized that this Hodge wanted to compete with him and get all the stupid high scores and all.

Alfie saw the fun in it and each time they would do something Alfie left everyone on the dust.

On the combat grounds Alfie pounded every one of the recruits.

He didn't go easy on steve but he also gave him a chance to show his moved and forms he taught him the past years.

On the shooting range Alfie only went to the 100+ meter targets and hit bullseye every time, almost effortlessly too.

On the tables where they assemble and disassemble their weapons, Alfie was like an expert even Sergeant Duffy don't know what to say anymore.

Steve on the other hand was also surprised, he has never seen Alfie touch a weapon, ever.

Yet he handles all the weaponry like an expert.

Steve asked about it but Alfie just said he didn't spent all that time cooking chicken.

Whenever Alfie did something cool he would look at the other recruits sneering at them.

It got them fired up and they worked harder.

Agent Carter would come and go every once in a while, and Alfie would sometimes see Steve's eyes wonder around her, the guy was struck with something he doesn't even know about.

Alfie took the chance to tease him here and there, and Steve didn't even know until Alfie started teasing him and Steve became a bit awkward whenever it involved Peggy.

It wasn't until June 20th on Wednesday did Alfie realized it was almost time for Steve to go get his serum because on their morning run at this moment we stopped at our usual checkpoint with Sergeant Duffy calling both Rogers and McBride to catch up.

At the checkpoint near the flag, there parked a military vehicle and in it was Peggy and a driving officer.

"Pick up the pace, ladies!!" Sergeant Duffy yelled.

"Squad Halt!!"

The recruits all stopped at the halfway point where the flagpole is.

The flagpole scene where Steve grabs it by unlocking the bottom was coming up.

"That flag means we're only at the halfway point, first one to bring it to me get's a ride with Agent Carter!" Sergeant Duffy said.

And then all recruits but Alfie and Steve stood watch as they watch the others try to get it, sadly no one did.

Hodge saw that Alfie wasn't trying to grab it and smirked thinking this was his chance, but his chances were just a pile of shitt.

"Come on! Get up there!" Drill Sergeant Duffy said.

"Nobody's got that flag in 17 years!" Duffy said.

No one seemed to have any progress so Sergeant just called it in.

But Alfie glanced at Steve and bumped him to get his attention.

"Do your thing Rogers, I know you got something in mind." Alfie said.

Steve raised an eyebrow before smiling and walked to the flag pole.

"Rogers, I said fall in!!" Duffy said.

Sergeant Duffy was about to say more when Steve took the lock from the bottom and made the flag pole fall.

After it fell Steve grabbed the flag while everyone was shocked, Alfie and Peggy were the only ones smiling.

"Thank you, sir." Steve ignored the stares and gave it to Sergeant Duffy before jumping in the back of the vehicle as Agent Carter smiled looking at him.

Alfie chuckled as he also walked forward to the vehicle to hop in, but his name was called.

"McBride fall back in line!!" Sergeant Duffy said.

"I would Sarge, but you see I'm injured and I need medical attention." Alfie said, he picked up his leg and showed blood stains on his shin uniform.

Sergeant Duffy had no choice but to send him back as well, but it was suspicious since the time Steve was getting a ride back early Alfie is suddenly injured and riding as well.

"Then you may go, head straight to the camp's clinic." Sergeant Duffy said.

"Roger boss." Alfie said.

"It's drill sergeant, McBride." Duffy said.

"Roger that drill sergeant boss, let's go!!" Alfie said and before Sergeant Duffy could say more Alfie touched the shoulders of the officer driving telling him to go.

The officer driving didn't moved the car one bit, he instead looked to Agent Carter since she was the one giving orders.

Peggy nodded and they began to drive.

"You alright? What happened?" Steve asked looking at Alfie's leg.

"Oh yeah no problem, it's just ketchup." Alfie said as he laid back on the vehicle relaxing.

"Ketchup?!" Steve looked at Alfie as if finally done with his bullshitt.

"You know you could get on trouble for that." Agent Carter said exasperated.

"But who would, I'm possibly the top soldier in this camp, and no one would just off me from this little harmless stunt." Alfie said.

"Al, you can't just-" Steve tried to talk.

"Yes yes Steven, I shouldn't be doing this and that, but who you should be lecturing is the Allies for letting that stupid mustache Hitler get this much power." Alfie said.

"It's more complicated than that." Agent Carter said.

"I'm sure, by the way Agent Carter you wouldn't be single are you?" Alfie asked.

Both Steve and Peggy's eyes twitched, the driver's eyebrows scrunched in this awkward moment.

Peggy seemed to have wanted to do something to Alfie, something that would hurt him.

Steve was worried because sometimes his friend can be a little over the top sometimes.

"Sorry sorry, that was not professional, I was actually hoping We could sit down sometimes and have a talk." Alfie said.

"Oh, what about?" Agent Carter asked.

"You'll know when we have that talk." Alfie said.

Steve looked at Alfie with a questioning gaze.

Alfie shrugged and signaled Steve not to worry.

•••••••

The next day they started their warm up with some exercises before going to do their 5 mile run fully equipped with military uniform and some weights.

As they exercised the Colonel came by with Doctor Erskine as they talked from a distance looking at the recruit.

Alfie could see that Colonel Phillips was not happy with something Doctor Erskine is saying, Alfie could imagine what they are talking about.

It wasn't until after Alfie saw Colonel grab a grenade took off the ring and threw it to their warm up.

"Grenade!!" Colonel screamed.

All the recruits scattered away from the little small object thrown at them.

Like the film Steve ran to the grenade and laid on top of it telling everyone to back off.

Alfie felt a bit mad at the self righteous idiot laying on top of the bomb.

Alfie suddenly rushed to Steve and lightly kick Steve to the side and grabbing the grenade and inhumanly threw it to the forest nearby so fast and hard the others could see it cut through the wind on it's way.

Even though the grenade felt heavy Alfie knew it was fake, but he loves to play along.

As everyone stood there surprised at Steve's attempted sacrifice and Alfie's monstrous throw Alfie walked up to Steve and picked him up patting the dirt off Steve.

"I really wish you don't do stupid shitt like that Steve, I wouldn't be happy, Buck wouldn't, and your mother definitely won't be happy." Alfie said.

"I had to, people could have gotten hurt." Steve said.

"Steve buddy, you should know everyone in this camp is expected to be hurt, that is what we all signed up for, just think about other options before sacrificing your life." Alfie said.

Steve nodded as they both looked into the forest not hearing anything go off yet.

"The grenade hasn't gone off yet." Steve said.

"Because it was a dud." The two looked back to see Colonel Phillips, Agent Carter, and Doctor Erskine.

"It was a test?" Steve asked.

"That was a hell of a throw you got recruit." Colonel Phillips said.

"I've been the captain of New York's best baseball team since I could walk, that throw was nothing." Alfie smirked crossing his arms.

•••••

"So what do you need to talk about?" Alfie asked.

Inside the barracks Alfie and Steve sat in one bed while facing Agent Carter on the other bed.

"It's about the two of you." Agent Carter said.

"Well we wouldn't be here otherwise." Alfie smartassed.

"There is a bit of a dilemma, between the Colonel and Doctor Erskine." Agent Carter said.

"What dilemma?" Steve asked.

"Well this division is not just to train soldiers, it is to make super soldiers, and before we start with anything we need a...a test subject to go first." Agent Carter said.

"Super soldiers? And Doctor Erskine is involved in this?" Steve asked.

"He is in charge of this project, the Colonel was supposed to give him the best candidate for the serum but Doctor Erskine had other plans." Agent Carter said lookin at Steve.

"Is there a man named Howard in this project?" Alfie asked.

"You know Howard?" Agent Carter asked.

"Know him? I was his only friend since junior high hahaha." Alfie said.

"And how did you come to know that Howard was involved in this project of ours?" Agent Carter asked glaring a hole at Alfie.

"Nothing too serious I just peeked at a few of his papers, we talk sometimes about ideas and creations in our minds, anyway enough of that back to business." Alfie said.

"The dilemma, are you saying Doctor Erskine is having a hard time choosing between me and Al?" Steve asked.

"Well Doctor Erskine chose you, Steve, to become the first super soldier.

Colonel Phillips on the other hand." Agent Carter said the last sentence as she turned to Alfie.

"Let me guess he pick me?" Alfie asked.

"Correct."

As Steve looked down in thought Alfie and Peggy talked.

"But that's kind of stupid why won't they just pick one instead of asking foot soldiers for their opinions?" Alfie asked.

Peggy shrugged at the question, Alfie had the thought of taking it but that's only deep thoughts, he already has his advantages and his plans will be up soon.

"What about you? What do you think?" Alfie asked Peggy.

"About what?" Peggy asked.

"About who should get the serum?" Alfie smirked asking her.

"I don't know, it's not for me to worry about." She said.

"You don't know or you won't pick?" Alfie asked.

"I'm here for the decision of you guys, we're not here to talk about what I thin-" Peggy snapped, but was interrupted by Steve finally speaking.

"Give it to Al, the serum." Steve said.

"He has the best scores, tests, and physique, he is strong in both mind and body and knows his way around weapons, take him." Steve said looking sure.

Peggy didn't seem that surprised as she probably thought the same, Alfie on Steve's side looked at him with a surprise look.

"Hahahaha I appreciate you thinking about me but I won't take it." Alfie said.

"Finalize our answer as Steve taking the first go at the Super Soldier Serum, for now I want to talk." Alfie said.

"But Al-"

"We're past that topic Steve, take the serum, it's a good way for you to stop being pathetic, hahaha." Alfie said.

"Very well, but what do you want to talk about?" Peggy asked.

"Take me to the front lines." Alfie said.

"What?!"

"Yeah, what?!"

The two asked in surprise.

"You two deaf? I said send me to the front lines." Alfie said.

"Why?" Steve asked.

"I'm just tired of doing all these light exercises, I just wanna go fight some Nazi's for now." Alfie said.

Steve was about to speak to rebuke his idea but Alfie just put up a hand stopping him from talking any further.

"Are you sure about this?" Peggy asked to which Alfie nodded to.

"Very well, I will see what I can do." Peggy said as she stood up walking out of the building.

Steve then looked at Alfie worriedly.

"What's your plan, Al?" Steve asked.

"I have a few plans in mind, don't worry I'll be fine, I have some luck with me." Alfie said.

"You know you should be the one to take the Serum, before you deploy, it could help you whe-"

"Shut up Steve, it would be better for you, you know how much it could help with your asthma, allergies, high blood pressure and your other 50 illness'." Alfie said.

"...you sure?" Steve asked.

"Haha, shitt if you ain't scrawny no more than I won't have to worry about you, though I will miss calling you scrawny, but we'll see who knows." Alfie said.

••••••••

Howard was a man of hard work and curiosity.

Sometimes he would work on things and ask how he should do it rather than if he should.

He is also a workaholic at times and would only go home when people he worked with tells him to.

Like today, Doctor Abraham Erskine told him to go home and take a rest because the day for their first test will come soon.

As Howard walked inside his small mansion he made sure to lock his doors and put his stuff down.

He goes to the kitchen to grab a drink after a long day, he picked up a small glass with a big glass of alcohol and put it on his kitchen counter.

Howard put some ice on his glass before turning around filling his glass up with some whiskey and took a sip.

"Pour me one too, would you?" A voice sounded in the dark and Howard immediately spit out his drink in shock.

*PFFFFFFTTTT*

In panic Howard dropped his drink as it breaks on the floor and Howard panically pulled one of the kitchen drawers grabbing a knife pointing it at the dark.

As he had if forward Howard slowly walks to the side wall and flicked the switch turning the lights on in the kitchen.

And there sat Alfie eating a sandwich with 5 other sandwiches on a plate in front of him.

"Sheez Loiuse, calm down Stark, It's just me." Alfie said biting his sandwich looking at Howard strangely.

*sigh*

Howard let out a big sigh of relief as he put down the knife and massaged his head.

"Damn it Al, stop doing that!! I don't know how you could just pop up anywhere but don't do that, at least ease me in and not startle the living shitt out of me." Howard said.

"Why would I stop doing something I love doing, anyways come sit, I made sandwiches." Alfie said.

"My sandwiches!" Howard said as he snatched a sandwich biting it.

"Mmm, this is good- I mean what the hell are you doing in my house?! Your trespassing." Howard said.

"Aww come one now, it's not trespassing if it's a friend." Alfie said.

"Actually it is still trespassing, why are you here so late anyways?" Howard asked.

"I might go to the front lines soon, so I came here to see if the things I requested you to make is ready." Alfie said.

"Already? How? You just enlisted less than a week ago, and why are you going to the front lines?!" Howard asked.

"It's in my gut, I have a feeling that I have a sense of belonging there, my stomach feels hungry to take down some Nazi." Alfie said.

"I'm not an expert on psychology Al...but I think you're a psychopath." Howard said as he enjoyed his sandwich not in the least bit afraid of Alfie's weird words.

"Yeah well we ain't all perfect, this is my bad trait, at least that's what people would think, but anyways is the suit ready?" Alfie asked.

"Well it is...but..." Howard seemed to wander off in his mind.

"What happened?"

"The thing is I didn't follow your plans in the paper." Howard said.

"You didn't? Then what did you do?" Alfie asked getting up to grab a drink from the fridge.

"Well remember that new flexible material you told me about?" Howard asked.

"Graphene?"

"No Kevlar."

"Oh yeah, what about it, finally able to naturally produce it?" Alfie asked.

"Well no but I am thinking of adding it to the suit you requested." Howard said.

"You are? But the original plan I gave you already has ceramic as it's bulletproof material." Alfie said.

"Yes I know, but I'm thinking of making another layer of protection using Kevlar, I don't know how you come up with these things but they are revolutionary Al, why don't you just present it to the public? You could even make something of yourse-"

"That's not me, I just want to...do other things, anyways how long will it take 'till you finish that suit?" Alfie asked.

"Well lucky for you I've already been working on Kevlar the moment you told me years ago, just give me a few weeks and it'll be done, I have something important to do soon so I won't have time for it." Howard said.

Surprisingly one of the things Alfie brought with him to this world and time was the information of materials such as Kevlar, and like others he knew how they were made or at least the way.

Back then he would talk about them to Howard which was for him a way to invest in materials, working fine at the moment.

"Let me guess the Rebirth Project?" Alfie asked which surprised Howard because it wasn't public, at least not yet.

"How do you know?" Howard asked.

"Please I probably know more than you, not literally, but my friend Rogers is your first test subject so take care of him." Alfie said.

"Oh, I heard Doctor Erskine had problems with a first tester, who would have thought it would be your friend." Howard said.

"Alright well good talking to ya, I'll come back soon to see how you are doing." Alfie said as he grabbed the last sandwich heading to Howards pool yard.

"Wait I got a question." Howard rushed.

"What's up?"

"The Vibranium you gave me...how did you get a hold of I-"

"Not telling you stark, maybe if you finish it then I will tell you about it haha." Alfie chuckled as he walked into the dark corner disappearing.

He could only think of Howard as his benefactor at the moment, because he doesn't know anyone else who is able to help without thinking of any gains.

All Howard seeked sometimes was knowledge.

Alfie made one thing clear to Howard, the materials he asked him to make will only be made by him and won't be government property at all.
